Inspector Doherty began his career in law enforcement in 1993. Upon graduating from the Suffolk County Police Academy, he was assigned to the Third Precinct.In 2002 he was promoted to Sergeant where he was initially assigned to the First Precinct before transferring to the Fifth Precinct in 2004.He spent the next ten years as a sergeant in the Fifth Precinct assigned to Patrol, COPE, and the Precinct Crime Section. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2013 and assigned to the Internal Affairs Bureau. He returned to the Fifth Precinct in 2016 as the Precinct Crime Section Lieutenant and was later designated Detective Lieutenant where he served as Commanding Officer of the Technical Analysis Section and the Fifth Precinct Detective Section.In 2017 he returned to the Internal Affairs Bureau as a Captain and became Executive Officer of the unit upon his promotion to Deputy Inspector in 2019.Later that same year he transferred to the Chief of Detectives Office where he was the Commanding Officer of the Precinct Detective Bureau, The Organized Crime Bureau, and The Major Crimes Bureau. He was promoted to Inspector in 2023 and became the Commanding Officer of the Fifth Precinct in 2024.He has a Bachelors Degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey and graduated from the 250th Session of the F.B.I. National Academy.
