Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Motor Vehicle Crash

Friday, August 15, 2025 at approximately 6:25 a.m.

Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Moriches today.

Nicholas Nevins was operating a 2022 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on Barnes Road, near Hulse Lane, when his vehicle struck a southbound garbage truck at approximately 6:25 a.m., injuring Mario Mendez, the waste collector standing on the back of the truck.

Nevins, 27, of Mastic, was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk for treatment of serious injuries. The waste collector, Mendez, 56, of Deer Park, was transported to the same hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the garbage truck, Fausto Velasquez, 49, of Brentwood, was not injured.

The motorcycle was impounded for a safety check. Officers from the Motor Carrier Safety Section conducted a safety check on the garbage truck.
